As women, we all have certain things we are never without, right? Just certain things that are always in our purse or pocket. I never leave the house without lip gloss, but something else that’s on my “always have” list might surprise you. It’s these foam ear protectors.

Soft foam ear plugs are always in my purse and if I go out socially at night they are for sure in my purse. And they should be in your purse too and I am going to tell you why.

But first, some context. I learned about foam earplugs years ago and I was so impressed with how they block sound despite being small, lightweight and super comfortable.

I fly on airplanes a lot with crying babies and I go to nightclubs with pounding music and I can’t tell you how many times popping these guys in has brought me peace and comfort out in the world. But it’s even bigger than that.

You see, lately there has been study after study showing that hearing loss in old age creates a domino effect because it leads to isolation, followed by loneliness, followed by depression, followed by serious illness. And so much of it can be avoided simply by not losing any hearing in the first place.

But how do you do that? You protect your hearing your whole adult life! Every time you’re exposed to loud motors, engines, music, lawnmowers, blenders or whatever, it can lead to permanent losses. Like anything an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And there’s hardly anything lighter, cheaper and easier to throw into your purse than two of these little guys.

If you find you never reach for them I will be very surprised because I reach for mine regularly. Treasure your body, treasure your senses, treasure your life.
