I often talk about systems when it comes to makeup, self-care, self-talk and all the rest of it. My motto is “Systems Are For Winners” because the more that we routinize something the more it becomes a normal part of us and the more benefits we receive.

Today as I was doing my makeup I looked down and realized here is a perfect example. Every morning I take a fresh paper towel and then I open all the main products I use so that they’re all ready and waiting. I lay out my brushes too, so that I can just grab as I go and not fumble around.

It’s a simple system but it works for me, not only because it saves me time but also because it makes me feel more professional, like a makeup artist or surgeon. In cooking this prepping is called “mis en place” and it means everything has its place.

Professionals lay out all their tools when they’re working and they do it for a reason. So I suppose opening all my makeup up injects an element of confidence and self-respect. And it makes the application process smooth and pleasant.

I am lucky enough to have a lot of counter space in my bathroom but when I am traveling I just find a mirror and lay everything out on a towel on the floor. Because I like my system. It’s neat, it’s orderly and it creates a good start to my day, which, let’s face it, is something we all can use.
