Today I want to talk about one of my favorite clothing items: the shrug.
If you haven’t heard the term, it refers to a top that has long sleeves joined in the back, with very little else. It’s designed to give a little warmth but without any bulk.
I first learned about these when I studied ballet. They’re popular in the dance world because they allow the teacher to see the lines of your body and yet you can have an extra layer to keep your muscles warm.
What I love about shrugs is how versatile they are. Today I’m wearing a pumpkin colored one with a black velvet jumper. I don’t have a lot of pumpkin in my wardrobe but with the addition of this one piece I get to feel like I’m wearing pumpkin all day.
Because they are so lightweight they’re easy to carry in your bag for warm nights when you want to put a little something on as the temperature drops. And you can extend the wear of your sleeves dresses and short sleeve tops by throwing a shug under or over them. I do that a lot in the fall and winter.
Lastly, they’re super comfortable, cute and no one seems to ever wear them, so you receive a lot of compliments and comments, which is also fun.
You can find shrugs like these at ballet retail shops and online, but I usually get mine on Amazon, where they sell for anywhere from $1 – $15 each.
